Have you ever had an ‘if only’ moment? Mine came yesterday (again) when the transformer went down and we lost power in the neighborhood. If only I’d completed my paperwork. If only I’d recharged my powerbank having travelled this past week and used them almost to capacity. If only … Problem is, ‘if onlys’ usually come too late.
With the power still out even now as I type (I managed to squeeze a tiny bit of juice from the powerbank); the if only is very real. When I awoke to the stillness which can only be heard in the absence of electricity, I found myself contemplating what was to become today’s Holy Nougat
“For the foolish, when they took their lamps, took no oil with them:” Matthew 25:3 ASV
Usually the decision to forego recharging the powerbank or accessing extra oil or such assumes that all will be well and there are no complications. We may choose to cast blame on others, but ultimately our choices are OURS to make. Often as Christians, we also experience subtle if only moments which could have been avoided if we choose to travel wisely and efficiently.
For this next season of our spiritual travels, might I encourage us to invite God’s direction in our decision-making so that we might have more oil/power to recharge and less ‘if onlys’
