You know, oftentimes our experiences and successes in life are a matter of perspective and approach. There are several motivational mantras around which (may) have proven effective in mobilizing us to think positively; some of them originating from faith-based persons. Today’s Holy Nougat can be considered the root of those motivational activities.

“Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.”

Philippians 4:8 NRSV

Think on those things …

Paul’s encouragement to the Church in Philippi came at the crux of a challenging season. Numbered among the ‘jailhouse’ epistles, the letter was a mix of appreciation for generosity and encouragement in the face of persecution from a harsh Roman government.

For some, it is likely that they were falling into despair and beginning to question God’s sovereignty in the face of authoritarian theocracy. The chapter begins with an exhortation to remain faithful and the desire that the unity of the fellowship be maintained. This is followed by the encouragement to be joyful in all circumstances.

Obviously, Paul knew that such joy is unnatural, hence his exposition on reprogramming their thought life. If Paul and Norman Vincent Peale are correct; then it becomes critical that you and I perform an audit on our minds/thought life. Are we optimistic or pessimistic or pragmatic at heart? What exactly are we occupied with when no one can ‘see’ our thoughts? What do we feed our minds with and are we aware that that becomes food for our spirits also? How does such spiritual food impact our relationship with God, self and others? How have life experiences contributed to our thought and spiritual life?

Romans 12:1-2 challenges each of us to undergo mental renewal as we strive to God’s Standard of excellence in our lives. Based on our individual responses to the questions above; could it be time for an overhaul? If yes, please join me in reflecting more intentionally on this nougat over the next few days. If not, we crave your prayers as we strive to realign our spirits.

Blessings and good morning

In Christ’s love and grace . . .
