So my friend and colleague is convinced that the other months of the year are there to provide a backdrop for her birth month. And, like a child with Christmas, she counts down to her month. There are many milestones for which us humans mark the time, and today’s Holy Nougat shows that this is not new.
““From now on, this month will be the first month of the year for you.” Exodus 12:2 NLT
Ironically, the feast of the Passover does not coincide with the Jewish new year celebrations. But this feast was highly anticipated in the original era. That’s because this reminds them and us that after years and years of bondage, freedom came.
Some might argue that they weren’t ready for freedom, nevertheless they were all filled with the anticipation of what was coming next.
Maybe they dreamed of houses, unlimited food and freedom to be and do. Perhaps they were preoccupied with how long it would take for them to taste freedom. Or possibly, they weren’t even entertaining notions of freedom until they saw it actually come to pass.
What we do know is that life began with Passover.
Years later, the significance seems to be downplayed; except that one Passover another Lamb was slain. And all the world has access to a different kind of full free! One which has turned many lives around and invites us to consider our world starting anew in recognition of the immensity of the act.
We celebrate Passover, the day things finally turned around for the Israelites. For in that liberation comes our own. A new dawn, a new year, a new life!
