Today is Thursday and by God’s mercy I am afforded dignity and visibility. Consider today’s Holy Nougat
““Once you had no identity as a people; now you are God’s people. Once you received no mercy; now you have received God’s mercy.””
1 Peter 2:10 NLT
It is hard for many of us to grasp the full implications of this text as we have never endured the indignity of being invisible. Invisible as a ‘homeless’ person; internally displaced people, refugee, migrant, person of color, religious actor, truth-teller, care giver, panhandler (professional beggar), addict, felon, abused, elderly, household helper … and the list goes on and on.
More critically, some of us have been guilty of being the dehumanizing or destabilizing force which displaced the invisible persons. Granted, I am certain that that’s sometimes justified – at least to us – but we run the risk of failing to see the humanity of the invisible.
God offers an antidote to the invisible. Like Hagar discovered while wandering around the desert, God sees each of us, knows each of us BY NAME, and invites us to receive mercy, adoption and status as God’s own. Moreover, for those of us who have been/are still invisible, God is still advocating for our right to visibility through dedicated men and women on this side of eternity.
Let’s each determine to affirm the humanity of and God’s presence within someone who may be silenced or ignored today and always.
