Someone ever gave you a basket to truck water uphill? Not a great feeling if the basket is woven from straw.
Here’s today’s nougat
“How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?” Luke 1.34
She got past the fright of seeing her divine visitor. But the message seemed more than ludicrous. She was not promised anything non-traditional; several women had been gifted with special babies in the past. In fact, most of those babies were firmly established in the Law and the Prophets. But THOSE sons were born to FULLY MARRIED women; moreover, those women were barren and wanted to start families. She was neither married nor batten. BUT, she was a virgin. And those weren’t the days when single parenting was accepted.
And yet, Mary said yes.
She could have been in the direct line of gossip, bullying, or scorn; that would have been easy. According to the Law, her engagement was to be broken and she should be stoned,
And yet, Mary said yes.
Sometimes, that which God invites us to seems wholly and totally impossible. While others may have walked a similar road, there’s doesn’t quite compare. And, if we dare to compare, the odds don’t seem to be in our favour.
But it is God who invites us.
Those around us might not only gossip, they might be jealous and convinced that we are not suited to the task. It is possible that our reputation may take a beating, especially if we seem under-qualified and the position has potential to establish us positively, or curry favour.
But it is God who invites us.
So, the ball is in our court. Even if it is a basket to carry water uphill, whenwe are wholly aware of what God desires from us, what is our response? Remember …
It is God who invites us.
