“We know that God hath spoken unto Moses: but as for this man, we know not whence he is.” John 9:29 ASV
How hard it is for us to embrace change. Even when it bears the stamp of the life transforming intervention of the Divine! It’s not that the ‘scoffers’ were unreligious. Rather, their understanding of Law and Prophets did NOT include a humble man from unpretencious roots (born illegitimate to a carpenter stepdad, having no form or comeliness); even if it was claimed that said ‘father’ traced his lineage back to King David. The upstart opened the possibility of preferential status with God for ALL who believe, not just some, and seemed more interested in the ceremonially unclean (sick, Gentiles, prostitutes, extortionists, widowed, etc.) than the rich or influential religious elite. They could not hear the Gospel he preached; even when it proffered healing to the physically sick.
What a hard and superficial bunch!
But …
Take a quick look in the mirror of your conscience, if you care to join me. How much of what they did Then is reflected in what WE do individually and collectively now! Amongst whom are we counted – the Undecided, the Unwavering (followers of Moses) or the Unrelenting (Love which comes from Christ for all)? If we’re truly honest, we are each of the former at one time or the other, moving to the perfection of Total Unending Love
That being said, we may wish to revisit
A – how we respond to those who do not conform to our grasp of the Gospel?
B – what lens do we use to interpret scripture and by extension, to critique the interpretation of scripture
C – where are the internal blockers to our receiving the presence of the divine in each of us?
