We speak of Saul’s zeal and Paul’s commitment and passion, or of his missionary journeys; but we scarcely ever consider the trials which Paul underwent for the sake of the Gospel.
He was arrested; hidden in a basket and released over the city wall; he was lied about; placed under house arrest and here we observe him being run out of town like a common thief. What a life! I know I wouldn’t intentionally go seek such; but I am also conscious that each person’s God experience varies from the other slightly. Moreover, I am reminded that after his conversion, Saul-Paul approached the saints in Jerusalem and initially experienced rejection. Until the Holy Spirit advised that Saul had genuinely experienced God for himself and that he would undergo his own set of trials. They then embraced him and gave him support!
When our sisters and brothers undergo trials for the Faith, how do we respond? Some are undergoing extreme treatment for the Faith, while others of us undergo light affliction. Do we respond with prayer and whatever physical or material resource in our possession; or determining that it must be their comeuppance? Worse yet, are we apathetic and unconcerned? Have we undergone any serious challenge for the Faith?
May God’s grace be ours as we rescue the perishing and offer care and comfort in times of trial.
