“I will delight in your decrees and not forget your word.” Psalms 119:16 NLT
What an exceptional vow! I read and wonder whether the psalmist really meant those words. Not that the intent isn’t pure, but it surely seems almost impossible . Or is it? Perhaps we should consider this in more details.
We note that this nougat comes from the longest chapter in the Bible, Psalm 119. The psalm is written as an acrostic, takes the reader from A to Z from beginning to end in outlining the value of God’s Word to the worshipper. It is intended as an outpouring of (his) dedication to God and God’s law. Some may even argue that it was the writer’s own credo (statement of faith). In terms of dedication, the psalmist’s commitment to prayer is consistent – verse 174 alludes to seven prayer times daily, which may not have included the nightly prayers (verses 55 and 148). This paints a picture of someone, perhaps a priest or artistic soul, whose life is genuinely Souled Out to God and whose faith was contagious.
When someone that devout then says, ‘I will delight in Your Words’, that is most likely what they meant. No ifs, No ands, No buts.
Moreover, the phrase also reflects a declaration of intent – in the future, Your decrees will give me joy. Thus, one could also hear this as a directive to the soul for later/ongoing compliance. Amid our current situations, how have our individual spiritual lives been nourished and have we found Joy in communion with God?
Additionally, the psalmist assures God that God’s Word will not be forgotten. It makes the assertion that prayer and Bible Study are central to his daily routine and are top priority. Although this may feel like Mission Impossible for many; the psalmist implies that love for God makes it doable.
Perhaps one way to ensure its truth for our lives is by committing some dedicated time to prayer, praise and reflection daily. (Some of us may already have an established routine – great! Carry on! Let this be merely encouragement or confirmation that you are on the right track!) We May even choose your be found in prayer and praise 7 times daily, reflecting on or simply reciting the Word for the day. And if seven feels steep, let’s start at once and build up over time. For sure, we can benefit from this practice mentally and spiritually.
May God’s Word be our delight always!
(P.s I will be away for sabbatical as of tomorrow. No nougats will be posted.)
