Here’s today’s nougat
And God said, “Let us make humanity In our image, in or unique likeness, so that they may be responsible for the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground. Genesis 1:26
So why was the onus of the stewardship responsibility described in such fine detail? Couldn’t they simply have said that humanity has responsibility over all animals or over all creatures? It would have been simpler to word or define.
But; our individual and corporate spiritual, moral and physical responsibility includes those creatures which swim, fly, walk and crawl. We do not have exemptions. Our status as ones created in God’s likenes INSISTS on consciousness of our environment and careful oversight of same.
So not only do we need to retain control of creation/nature, but we also are bound by our likenes to God’s own essence to handle creation with care.
Can you imagine what happens when, owing to our selfish (read ungodly) nature, there are no living things left in this earthly garden? Many have begun to entertain thoughts about life on other planets; but how do we propose to make it there, when we have NOT yet mastered having dominion here?
Maybe when we begin to affirm our similarity to God, we will realize that dominion is not about destruction. Rather it is about good governance and right relationships with each other and with God’s creation. It’s about accepting individual responsibility and walking in the authority vested in us by God.
