Have you yearned for revival in your space? The kind of extended Holy Ghost revival that has the power of God moving mightily for seasons? No, I’m not referring to an afterglow, like what many churches fall back on after a revival fire cools down. I’m talking about us burning for Christ, living in purpose, on purpose. Do we dare dream of such? I don’t know if those disciples dreamed of such, but it’s what they got when God’s fire visited them at Pentecost. Let’s learn more from Today’s Holy Nougat
Acts 5:14-15 CEVDCI
[14] Many men and women started having faith in the Lord.
[15] Then sick people were brought out to the road and placed on mats. It was hoped that Peter would walk by, and his shadow would fall on them and heal them.
Revival
Medically, a revival is feasible when a person’s condition is grave but not totally lost. The doctors may use a defibrillator or another appropriate device to convince the organs that they should work once again. We may have seen or read medical dramas that offer a sense of what happens … the electric shock … the spasm … perhaps a second or third jolt … then the patient convulses, and is restored to life. Not usually the same as before, but enough to keep them alive for another season.
Socially, revival can refer to a fashion trend regaining prominence after having lost popularity for several seasons. Usually, those resurges include slight adjustments: it would still maintain some of the unique features of yesteryear, but include enough change to make it different. This is evident in most clothing and accessories – they may offer a nod to basic or previous designs: wide pant legs, A-lines, backpack vibes, cat-eye glasses, kid leather, kitten heels, etc. Of course, there’s vintage, but even vintage has to get oldfor is value to appreciate.
Revival may also occur in a town, city or neighbourhood that undergoes an amazing transformation (a face-lift if you will). In such cases, the economy and culture benefit, which has a ripple effect on other facets of community life.
A spiritual revival doesn’t always occur in the location of a dying faith. It can happen where there’s a new church plant or where mediocre faith becomes standardised. If we were to be very literal, the faith that died at Calvary did so even before Jesus was murdered. His presence on earth was a glimpse of life with the living God. Most definitely super-natural, and not mediocre or natural. It’s something the body of Christ needs to offer a dying world today.
Self-Check
What would new life in Christ in our contexts require from us?
Deeper Dive
Thus, the action in our Nougat is a build-up on what began at Pentecost. That revival occurring among a group of believers flowed from Christ’s earthly ministry, where touching the fringes of His cloak resulted in healing (see Matthew 14:36 and the various versions of the bleeding woman). For me, Christian revival was birthed in the ashes of the true wave of Jewish faith: submission to YHWH after the crucifixion of YHWH’s son, our Messiah Jesus. He is the only true Messiah.
With His death, it was believed that true faith would die.
BUT
He rose three days later.
He ascended forty days after His Resurrection.
Fifty days after His Resurrection, and
Ten days after His Ascension, Y’shua fulfilled His promise. The disciples and onlookers received a special inflow of God’s Spirit.
God’s Spirit revived them from their grief and malaise, and equipped them for the ‘greater works’ promised in John 14:12. That’s the revival we see taking place in Acts 5. The greater works promise also applies to us today. Are we ready for Christ’s greater works? Will we partake in God’s revival?
Point to Ponder
In Revelation 3:14-22, the message to the church is clear. They lost the passion and had become lukewarm or mediocre. They needed a jolt of love for Y’shua. Otherwise, Y’shua said they would become outcasts. Let us ensure that we remain ready to live boldly for Christ, ushering in revival – a fresh love and witness for Christ – wherever we are.
