Nougat 9

In the face of wars, increased rumours of war, news of epic global flooding and polycrises, it is easy to get overwhelmed. Today’s Holy Nougat offers us a refreshing note of hope.

Romans‬ ‭15‬:‭33‬ ‭NLT‬‬

“And now may God, who gives us his peace, be with you all. Amen.” ‭‭

God Grants Us Peace

The Roman church was up against internal and external challenges. They had issues with their singular identity, to the extent that they were challenged about accepting the diverse society (see verse 7). They were at the epicentre of the attacks on non-Jews, which Paul himself had once been a focal point. They were beset internal issues about roles and gifts (possibly in regard to who manifested the spiritual gifts and who had leadership), in light of their external roles. It was hard to be a believer in the nascent Christian society!

This was the same faith community however, who had been encouraged by Paul to stand firm in the knowledge of their calling. Do you remember … They were Called, Chosen, Justified and Glory-bearers. Paul also helped them to realize that as believers, each person had access to the Gifts of God’s Spirit for the building up of the body of believers (see Romans 12). It suggests that they could build their hope from the nuggets of encouragement Paul offered in this letter.

It is on those grounds that Paul offered the simple, though powerful blessing. May God, Who gives us His peace, be with you all. Amen.

As we reflect, I’d change only one word in the blessing. I am including myself in gifting God’s peace and presence. For in these times, we must pray that all Christian leaders are able to tangibly feel God’s presence with us.

We need God’s guidance in knowing what to say when, how to say what, and when to be silent. We need to remember that regardless of what we face, God is our peace, and that God is with us. We need God’s discernment in leading those in our charge. And we also need God’s present encouragement in times of foment.

I pray God’s presence and peace for all saints, church leadership, workers, and those who simply attend.

May we all experience God’s presence and peace as we discern our identity, gifts, and roles in these times.

May our spirits be revived by the certain knowledge that Christ is with us.

May we be sources of inspiration and hope to others who are disquieted.

May God’s peace that lives within us be present and contagious today and always. Amen.
