Being afraid is okay provided we know how and where to channel our fear. For some of us the fear is extreme, generating outlandish, inexplicable or even violent responses (self-preserving) stemming from the recall of past trauma. For others, there may be a retreat into one’s self; or even hysteria. Of course there are less noticeable responses along the spectrum also. In many of the aforementioned scenarios, we are reflecting knee-jerk coping mechanisms. I offer each of us an extra response, courtesy of today’s Holy Nougat
“But when I am afraid, I will put my trust in you.” Psalms 56:3 NLT.
What a joy it is to know that God is undaunted by our fears. Is not surprised by them, does not criticize us for our unreasonable behavior, and never gets tired of us coming back time and again. In fact, it’s the opposite.
When we are afraid, unlike the rest of the world, that’s when God bids us ‘Come!’ Awesome isn’t it! And, although we cannot see it, there is also a hedge of protection which keeps us. Plus, if we actually choose to switch our focus from that which terrifies us to The One which IS able to solve the fear factor; there is a supernatural Peace which we can appropriate.
So, in an era when everyone seems to be profiting off our fears (news and social media; politicians, healthcare industry, civil and even religious bodies to name a few); might I recommend that we avoid the prescription drugs, the self-medication and other equally destructive responses. I offer us Jesus. And when we go to Him – even as a last resort – let us be honest and then ask for peace from our perfect Love, Who is willing and able to drive away our fear time and time and time again!
