Here’s today’s Holy Nougat™
Never stop praying. 1 Thessalonians 5:17 NLT
As you can tell, we are still in our season of prayer.
Do we think of prayer as conversations with God, or obligations that need to be met? For, if they are conversations with God, and especially if God is our friend, praying without ceasing becomes less of an impossibility and definitely less chore-like.
I guess that means I ought to ask, what is your relationship with God like? Is it bona fide friendship (also pronounced bony-fied) where God is our “ride or die”, BFF, whom we love ‘to the moon and back’; i.e. we’re so close folks can’t help but notice the extent of our friendship? (And no I’m not talking going around sending chain letters on Facebook or WhatsApp about denying Jesus or else)
Is it an on-again, off-again friendship where you don’t always KNOW what the state of the relationship is … but you know you’re friends? Or is it casual friendship which only matters when in need (like screaming the name like a swear-word or in a crisis)?
Please don’t answer me. The self check is personal. Talk with God about it. Praying without ceasing is easier when the relationship with God is close (even if not at the BFF level), for then we may find that God’s opinion matters all the time. Just like how we factor our parents’ or friends’ opinions, even when they’re not with us.
For those who aren’t that close, it may feel like an impossibility; just something else to fail at. Not quite. Many of us have running conversations in our minds. So, what if we included God in some of those for starters? Or tried to be more conscious of God’s presence and tried to please God just a little more?
I have it on GREAT authority that we can tell God that we are upset about something that didn’t go according to our expectations, without worrying that God will break. Just check the Psalms. Or ask my GREAT authority. Better yet, have a chat with God about it.
What? Oh don’t worry about how long it’s been since you last spoke, God’s waiting to chat with you right now. And, maybe – if you care to listen – you might even hear God responding …
