Some time ago, we touched on God’s glory and stopped short of examining it’s implications. Perhaps it would benefit us to attend to a greater glimpse of the Moses-YHWH conversation to appreciate today’s Holy Nougat™
The Lord replied, “I will make all my goodness pass before you, and I will call out my name, Yahweh, before you. For I will show mercy to anyone I choose, and I will show compassion to anyone I choose. Exodus 33:19 NLT
The Wilderness which Moses and the Children of Israel faced was vast, fearsome and riddled with danger. Moses had no doubt about the complexity of the task he was burdened with, having served as shepherd to his father-in-law’s flocks for a few decades. And, having reluctantly agreed to shepherd God’s children, Moses desired a guarantee of God’s protection and provision.
Subsequently, Moses asked the Lord for coverage similar to that of Cain upon him and ALL those God has placed in his care; without which he, Moses, was NOT prepared to move with his charges (NB God’s goodness upon Cain afforded him travel throughout the face of the earth without being hurt by others. cf Genesis 4:15-16). Having received God’s assurance of FULL and TOTAL coverage for the journey, Moses asks for proof; in the form of God’s glory revealed.
Now what God’s response is
– God’s Goodness would pass before Moses
– God’s Name would go before Moses
– God’s Mercy and Compassion is made ready to whom God wills
This suggests that God’s glory involves the totality of God’s goodness, the revelation of God’s most secret name (YHWH) and the dispensation of God’s mercy and compassion!
Sounds fairly simple right?! After all, it’s just about God’s goodness.
Not quite.
Because the potency of God’s goodness is such that No Human can behold such and live! I don’t think that I can even begin to comprehend such levels of pure, undiluted, unfiltered goodness.
What then does this imply for you and I? I’d propose that God’s compassion is available to Whomever God chooses – including you, me and those we consider abhorrent. Further, when we ask God to go before us, it means we also can tap into the protective nature of God. God’s glory will prepare the way, especially when we are about God’s business.
Might I encourage us to be honest with God as we travel along and to anticipate God’s compassion reaching out to us.
