“The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives.” Psalms‬ ‭37:23‬ ‭NLT

The day began like any other, with devotions. That morning however, the added prayer was for God to order the steps. Despite the prayer, the journey to church was delayed and, running late, came off at the incorrect stop. it had rained, drizzled in fact, so the roads were wet. But as was the case where dogs were, there were puddles all over.

One such puddle was on the sidewalk, and almost filled the entire walkway.

But being distracted by tardiness, it was seen at the last minute. However, it was spotted in time. The person grumbled about nasty dog owners. And while that was true, no owner was there to clean up after the dogs. And the puddle had not moved. The person sidestepped the puddle. None was on the shoes or clothing.

And the person remembered the request that God would order the steps.

For it was God Who allowed the person to SEE the puddle; despite being late and distracted. Having seen the puddle however, there was need to decide on the next course of action – grumbling, walking through, or side-stepping.

Grumbling did not remove the puddle. It was still a blockage on the sojourner’s path.

Walking through would have tainted the shoes and perhaps the clothes; and would have definitely spread the puddle a bit further. Not a wise option.

However, sidestepping the puddle afforded the sojourner a safe way out, though the puddle remained.

In life, there are many a puddle. We ask God to order our steps and often ASSUME that the way will be totally clear; even when our actions cause detours into unfamiliar territory. Despite life’s terrain, God orders our steps and usually (read always) affords us the chance to SEE puddles along the way – IF we’re paying attention (we often aren’t!).

When we face those invariable puddles; we also have choices for make. Grumble, sidestep, plunge forward. We may also warn others or remove the puddle, knowing that there will be others.

Whatever our decision, God is still there ready to order our steps. Sometimes ready to clean us off, when we land in the mess instead of sidestepping.

Nevertheless God seeks to order our steps, provided we choose to follow …
