I’m by no means great at fishing. I usually catch one or two, enough to redeem myself … not the catch of the day mind you, but I can help myself. Of course this is at a recreational fishing space where the fish are all but given to me.
Visits to Hellshire Beach, Port Maria, Greenwich or Old Harbor Bay fishing village (Jamaica), Lake Malawi or Oistin (Barbados), usually help me get a better perspective on the business of fishing.
Firstly, I notice there are different types of fish, despite them being sea (ocean) or lake fish. They have different guess, varied sizes and even their find are different.
I also notice that few of those are simply rod and reel fish, they are mostly net and occasionally spear gun caught. Some are easier caught at high tide, full moon or by deep diving. Others are just not easily caught. Moreover, for net and some rod and reel fishing, fishing is done in teams.
And, no matter what tool is used to catch the fish – bait/lure, nets, traps, spear guns – the is need to repair/replace equipment and/or parts. It’s the nature of the trade. Most of all, fishing requires patience. And, if Jamaican fishing lore is to be believed, one has to relearn fishing tactics at different times, or even try new spots to maximise the possibilities for a good catch.
Could this be what Christ needed us to consider all those years ago?
• Recognize that humans are different and their experiences are different
• Approach each one only after taking the time to understand her/his habitat
• Ensure that our tools are up to date all the time
• Be patient
• Be relevant and most of all,
• Be open to the Holy Spirit’s guidance
For only then might we be able to invite others to share with us in the joys of life with Christ.
