Were you one of Those children who got selected to present a letter in an acrostic poem? If yes, how was the experience? While I cannot recall my own experience, I’ve heard my fair share at kinder events – graduations, prize giving. Carol service and also at church. Were you aware that there are acrostics in the Bible? The Hebrew expression ‘Qoph’ can be viewed literally as the 19th letter of the alphabet with a numerical value of 100; or symbolically, where it speaks to time and in some instances alludes to the holiness/omnipresence of God. When we apply the symbolism of the letter to what we have read; we find that the Psalm moves us from childish prattle to the spiritually profound sense of wonder at Who God is.
What we are invited to recognize is that God’s witness to God’s self is ALWAYS with us, never wavering in holiness. So if we haven’t seen the proof of such, perhaps we have not been looking. Is it any wonder that the psalmist compares lack of understanding to death?
My dears, there is an awesomeness to our God which is as visible to the interested follower as it is otherworldly. One only has to peruse the wonder of Creation and allow oneself to marvel at its beauty. Or consider the miracle of life. Or ponder the intricacies of awakening “on our own” (not!) daily to get a glimmer of God’s witness to God’s self. [Some folks may disagree but I see proof of God’s god-ness in all those experiences and then some]
Today, we are invited to live, to truly live by looking for God’s signature , proof that God does exist and is with us, in the unexpected places. And perhaps when we find them, we may choose to share with someone who is seeking a new lease on life.
