Hey

How’d we love the ones who throw us under the bus? Isn’t that some kind of abuse seriously? Consider today’s Holy Nougat™️

“In the past, when Saul was our king, you were the one who really led the forces of Israel. And the Lord told you, ‘You will be the shepherd of my people Israel. You will be Israel’s leader.’”” 2 Samuel‬ ‭5:2‬ ‭NLT

I can’t imagine David’s thoughts when he heard those words. These were Saul‘s kin, suddenly affirming him; finally ready to recognize his legal and spiritual authority. A day late and a dollar short I’d say.

None of what they said was unfactual. Nothing.

But if they knew that all along, why wait until lives were lost, Saul and his likely heirs were dead before saying that? As usual, I ask about the motive. But this time, I know the answer. They were saving their skin before the new king. (Sounds gross until we realize how many of us do similar things in the workplace – like trying to ingratiate with a new boss by discrediting other persons)

And while we could delve deeper into their words and motives; I’d like to invite us to think about our own response to such about face. These folks were kin to the army which pursued David like a fugitive, because he posed a threat to Saul’s reign. Some might even have fought for Saul. Would you trust them? And if you did, what would you do with them?

Some of us say keep your friends close and your enemies closer; but how do we handle repentance from one who betrayed us? Using the term forgiveness becomes a real challenge in cases like these; but isn’t that what it’s about? Forgiving the other, even if they are going to throw us under the bus or die trying.

Lord

I truly desire to be like You, to overcome evil with love; to keep turning the other cheek; to forgive time and again. But that is only possible by Your supernatural intervention when You transfuse my heart permanently with You. Until then, forgive my selfishness I pray, amen

In Christ’s love and grace . . .
