In 1878 Edwin Hatch debuted a song in the publication ‘Between Doubt and Prayer’. I confess a fascination with the pamphlet’s title, for it is my view that we are very often caught in that place. That liminal space between doubt in God’s ability to complete what God has already begun in/ through us and a prayer that God will in fact accomplish the impossible through/for us. Hatch seems to suggest that the power to believe in God’s abilities is not innate, but is given us by the power of God’s Spirit.
And that’s what life by God’s Spirit seems to offer. The ability to believe that which God declares and follow accordingly. To live in God’s power, where once we were as dead. What would happen if we were to invite God’s Spirit upon us once again? Would we be starting a revolution within? Are we already intimately familiar with God’s Spirit?
