An audiologist once performed a hearing test to determine how much fluid was in the ear and its impact upon hearing loss. One of the tests required the raising of the hand when a beep was heard. At several points the subject responded, but there was no beep. Distortions were added, the beeps were less audible. Occasionally the subject turned to face the examiner, but was told to look ahead. The examiner was on the outside. After a while, unable to see anyone and feeling alone, the subject cried out, “I’m scared”. The examiner quietly stated. “I am right here. The test is almost over.”
To the casual onlooker, the subject’s fears were unwarranted. Because there was only a glass partition and a door between the subject and the examiner. But the partition was sound-proof. And the subject was afraid. Plain. Simple. Afraid.
And then the Lord spoke.
I was struck by the similarity between the test and our desire to hear from God. Did you notice? For many of us, hearing from God is like an audiology exam. it’s hard to hear the still small voice and the intervals between each manifestation may lead us to THINKING that we are hearing God’s voice. At times, there are also major distortions which prevent us from hearing clearly. And we turn to God. And sometimes, the distance between us and God feels so immense, we become afraid.
Unfortunately, we often consider the views of the “casual onlooker”. We convince ourselves that we should not voice our fears.
BUT there’s Great News! God wants us to look heavenward for support. No test is so important that God wishes us to look away. And, whenever we feel alone, we know that God is ready to offer support, to remind us that the test is almost over, and to remind us that we have The Comforter ALWAYS!
Hallelujah! That’s Great news.
