Hello hello my dear
Greetings to you. What time is it where you are? Had your ablutions already? Here’s today’s Holy Nougat
“When Jesus came to Simon Peter, Peter said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?”” John 13:6 NLT
There are just some things that we don’t automatically do for healthy adults. Like bathing them (those days went by a long long time ago). Moreover, besides being the Messiah, Jesus was The Rabbi; Peter The Disciple. As a fisherman, he might not have been literate but Peter would have had opportunity to be acquainted with social conventions – and masters washing disciples’ feet was NOT part of normal fare.
Peter’s question was therefore very much in order. He was basically double checking that his eyes had not failed him. He was probably even indirectly reprimanding his colleagues- how could you sit silently and allow Jesus to be your servant? And many of us nurse similar ideas.
Church, society and even tradition have taught us how to compartmentalise our lives. And we know that there’s aspects of our lives which NEVER see the ‘light of day’ – our fears, besetting sins, our deep rooted hurts – issues which we don’t discuss for whatever reason; sometimes even excluding those who were also there or similarly involved. And, should Jesus or anyone else offer to ‘wash our feet’ (ie address the mess once and for all); like Peter; our hasty rejoinder is; ‘ … are you going to wash my feet?‘
Others might quickly back off, leaving us languishing with our dirt; but Jesus is still here, waiting. Hear Jesus’ gentle responding ‘If I don’t get to wash the hidden shame/compartments in your life; I cannot claim you as totally mine!’ (verse
