How are you? Blessed and blessing, I hope. Yesterday I was exposed to a wonderful treat – a frozen custard combo. Gelee (aka icee) sandwiched between frozen custard. In a word, yummy! Sometimes, our appreciation of a nougat (God’s word) is influenced by knowing the entire passage, or by application of another nougat.
Here’s today’s Holy Nougat™
And when Herod was about to bring him forth, the same night Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains: and guards before the door kept the prison. Acts 12:6 ASV
The night before his execution, Peter sleeps in blissful peace, unconcerned that he was sentenced to die. Not only is he sleeping , but he’s under heavy guard detail while he sleeps.
Now that is noteworthy.
Especially given his previous track record as a hothead. But Peter had changed. And he was standing on the promises of God. (Or should we say sleeping on the stormy boat?) Peter had finally understood the principle which later became a part of his first letter (epistle); ‘Place all our cares on God, for God cares about us’. (1 Peter 5) A lesson I’m beginning to internalize.
You see, when we place God’s business first, we find that when it matters to us it matters to God. Not always without a struggle (or even persecution for righteousness’ sake), but it’s still – in fact we’re still – on God’s radar. Even when shackled between prison guards!
So as we undergo, let us look up – to the hills from whence cometh Our Help (Psalm 121) – for, in yet a little while, we SHALL OVERCOME. If you need to borrow the Jamaican expression, “Lord, take the case and give me the pillow”. Weird statement, but definitely one of faith. Peter faith. Faith to calmly fall asleep while chained between prison guards!
