Hi
An interesting fact about the hummingbird. Throughout the day, the movement of the world’s tiniest birds is almost non-stop. They are always a-flutter. However, when they are not in migratory mode, the their metabolism lowers to 1/15 of its usual movement in an effort to conserve energy. In this state, it is as though the hummingbird is dead; but it is in torpor. Many of us are like the hummingbird – we are constantly a-flutter having limited time for rest. Nevertheless, despite our desire to keep going, the blueprint for practical existence not only affords us a break at night, but encourages our taking a break at least once weekly. Consider today’s Holy Nougat for a moment.
“On the seventh day God had finished his work of creation, so he rested from all his work.” Genesis 2:2 NLT
Rest is important for success, especially during battle. We may feel that it is necessary for us to keep advancing, especially when we have the advantage, but resting sharpens our awareness, reflexes and even our judgement. That being the case, let us consider – when last have we truly stepped away from an issue in the heart (heat) of battle? And, when we chose not to step away (especially when trying to prove ourselves to others) how accurate have we been in our output?
I am confident that I am not the only person whose judgement has been severely impaired by partial sleep deprivation, or by trying to maintain too many irons in the fire at the same time. Notice how stressed society is these days? Often lack of rest adds to that – whether it be earlier departures to avoid longer commutes, other persons adding to our workloads or even just a constant sense of fatigue/burn out.
Whether we flutter like the hummingbird or not; let us take the opportunity to rest this weekend. We can take that time to be at one with God. Who knows, we just may find critical strategies downloaded into our psyche for the battles ahead
God bless you.
