One night the Lord spoke to Paul in a vision and told him, “Don’t be afraid! Speak out! Don’t be silent! Acts of the Apostles 18:9 NLT
In a time when the church’s teachings are questioned by its own congregants as well as the wider society, when truth is relative and hostilities outweigh agreeing to disagree; it is so easy to be overwhelmed and retreat in silence. After all, minding one’s own business could be life-saving. (S/He who keepeth her/his mouth keepeth her/his life … or so the saying goes)
But that is not in keeping with God’s desires for us. God’s plans for our lives involves much more than that. The Lord has empowered us to be witnesses in the best Witness Protection Programme this side of eternity. No need to be afraid. We are called to speak life, becoming a voice for those who have been rendered silent.
And it definitely requires that we remain committed to our relationship with Christ. One wherein we are so confident that God is listening, we happily engage our hearts in accessing God’s heart. Then, having truly connected with God, the willingness to stand up, speak out and to eventually shut up.
