Nougat 1

Hi

Today’s Holy Nougat is a challenge for many of us; isn’t it?

“But when I am afraid, I will put my trust in you.” Psalms‬ ‭56:3‬ ‭NLT‬‬

The weird thing about Trust; is that we often think Trust has to be earned. So if we have an off putting life experience, we shut down and everyone who remotely brings the experience to memory has to prove themselves worthy of our trust. And that may explain a child’s trusting nature vis-a-vis a scarred adult or teen; or even why we use the phrase ‘childlike trust’ to refer to unguarded faith in a person or system.

Sometimes we even find ourselves mistrusting God. Just think. How many times have we expected God to come through in a particular way and it did SO NOT HAPPEN that way! And the natural human approach is to get a bit mad for trusting. We berate ourselves and some of us find that the very core of our faith is challenged.

Trusting God is hard work sometimes. Truly hard.

But let us assume for a moment that these words came from David’s heart. It seems a bit incongruous right. For David was fearless! Defeated Goliath with one itty bitty stone. And was king in exile/hiding for about 40 years; many of which were spent in enemy turf. Yes sire. He was in Saul’s palace and often feared for his life. And among the Philistines, he had to fake mental illness (or make it a little more exaggerated) for the survival of his team – family and fighting men. If he was behind these words; just maybe he had some experience in disappointment.

Yet, David CHOSE to trust God.

Sounds to me like he wasn’t just a crazy infernal optimist; but his experience of God’s provision established a track record that he literally was willing to bet his life on. Trusting God might well have been about his peace of mind as it was about faith. He KNEW what his other options were.

How about us; have we established enough personal experience with God to state categorically Where our trust lies? Are we choosing to focus on God’s bigger picture instead of our fears?

As for me, I’m still working on trusting God all the time.
