Hi
Are you familiar with the saying, “When you are down to nothing, God is up to something”? A bit cliche perhaps, but oh so true.
Here’s today’s Holy Nougat
“What can I do to help you?” Elisha asked. “Tell me, what do you have in the house?” “Nothing at all, except a flask of olive oil,” she replied. 2 Kings 4:2 NLT
Nothing … except
The widow was down to nothing. Her house was empty, her marriage was long done, (thanks to death) and her hope was ruining low.
But it had NOT died.
For the widow recalled that she had a smidgen of oil left. And that was actually more than she could ever imagine. For, what she had symbolised her faith and the very literal presence of the Divine. Ironically, the widow might have been unaware of the treasure she possessed, but the prophet KNEW. ( Remember – oil was used to anoint the priests as well as to declare God’s chosen king. And in Psalm 23, oil was a preservative and the source of overflow).
That being said, in actuality the widow had … a lot. With God on her side, and awareness of Who she had on her side, her dilemma moved from nothingness to more than enough.
I guarantee that God can do the same for us. Using what we have, God transforms our Nothing Buts into something beautiful and More than we can ever ask, hope for or imagine. When we’re down to Nothing But; God has already worked out the details of our Something More. When all we have left is a flask of Hope; we have all we need.
May our flasks be overturned today so we find just enough hope to remember that God’s got this. Especially in the face of hopelessness.
God bless us all.
In Christ’s love and grace . . .
