Do not stifle the Holy Spirit. 1 Thessalonians 5:19 NLT
Stifling the Holy Spirit is as easy as being crowd conscious, choosing our own wil or silencing God’s still small voice when we are called. Furthermore, it is possible to consistently stifle the Holy Spirit until it becomes almost impossible to hear and heed.
In his letter to Timothy, Paul encourages the fanning into flame active spiritual gifts. In other words, being open to the movement of the Spirit in our lives. I believe that that’s one way to assure engagement of the Holy Spirit. We might also consider ensuring that we maintain a consistent prayer life inclusive of intentionally active interactions with God. Reading God’s Word and learning or understanding God’s ways and patterns of speaking also helps to keep us in tandem with God’s Spirit. When we continue to live these and remain connected to other believers, we will find that stifling God’s Spirit is not a major aspect of our daily walk.
