Hi
Have you ever stopped to consider what your relationship with Jesus would have been like had you been around back in the day? Sometimes I KNOW I’d have been the faithful beloved disciple. And then there are those other days… Here’s today’s Holy Nougat™
“No,” Peter protested, “You will never ever wash my feet!” Jesus replied, “Unless I wash you, you won’t belong to me.”John 13:8 NLT
So, this might have been one of those questionable days. My understanding is that shoes were not a standard staple in Peter’s day. Rather most people wore thongs/sandals which often meant sand-caked, road worn feet.
Cleaning feet was a servant’s job. It was dirty, messy, and quite likely, smelly business; which very few persons would have aspired toward. Being the disciple of Jesus, it was only right that Peter insist that his rabbi avoid such a humiliating role. On the natural plane, Peter was doing the right thing. And that’s the challenge many of us would rather not face. How many of us, then or now, would really be willing to wash Jesus’ feet? How many of us are willing to go that distance for “the least of these”; whether it be cleaning bodies, feeding persons, working with individuals who have severe mental and/or physical disabilities,?
Peter’s statement may have been rash and uninformed, but his heart was in the right place. May we be found to be like-minded to those who are in need.
Thanks for joining us in this Divine feast.
