Hi

Though we might not readily admit it, many of us are afraid of something. I believe that it may be psychological or physical or even emotional; nevertheless fears are real and sometimes crippling. Fear has so consumed us that there is a phobia for every single fear, including the fear of being afraid. Phobophobia. Yes indeedy. For many, fear has gripped us and transformed us from confident self-assured individuals to panic attacks and anxiety disorders. The truth is, for the one grappling with fear, her/his concerns are valid. I know that mine not only seemed real, but the responses were involuntary, causing distress for those obliged to live through it.

In today’s Holy Nougat however, we are offered a way out.

“I prayed to the Lord, and he answered me. He freed me from all my fears.” Psalms 34:4 NLT

What an awe-filling assurance in an era which thrives on fear! When we seek God’s face; we can be delivered from ALL our fears. That’s good news. However, it is important that we read and absorb the not so fine print.

We have to seek God’s mercy to be rescued from fear!

The psalm is credited to David during his season in exile, when he was obliged to become a different persona for his safety. He had every reason to fear the Philistine Abimelech/Achish. Yes, he was visited by fear – several times throughout his life – but unlike me, unlike perhaps you; David did not allow the fear to define him. Fake personality notwithstanding, David CHOSE to trust God.

Which brings us back to the beginning. I believe that for us to be delivered from ALL our fears, we should first identify them. What makes you afraid? (Since I’m not your counselor or analyst, you don’t have to respond aloud, but feel free to be honest with yourself.) Or, phrased slightly differently, What triggers fear in you? Can you recall the first fear response you experienced? Note the difference or similarity between then and now.

Give all the situations to God right now, including the fear that the fear won’t go away. Read the verses which begin Psalm 34. Note that they are exalting God. I believe that praises will overcome fear as praises usher us into the tangible presence of God. Remember – the psalmist SOUGHT God’s presence. For he knew that there’s freedom from fear in God’s presence (2 Corinthians 3:17). Plus, being one who actively encountered God, David knew God to be Perfect Love Who casts away ALL fear (1 John 4:18). He also might have realized that fear is a spirit – thus subject to God’s rule. And God’s Spirit births Love, so we focus on God and not the object of fear; Power to withstand that which we feared; and Soundness of mind, to overcome the irrationality (2 Timothy 1:7)

Please don’t hear me saying that our fears aren’t real. Please don’t hear me saying we ought not be mindful in these times. However, when caution and wisdom are overruled by extreme or irrational behavior, it’s time to pray. To praise God and hand the fears and their source over into God’s custody. Repeat as necessary until the last bit of fear is gone.

Hosanna! Lord Jesus save us from debilitating fear and restore us to our right minds by Your Spirit we pray. Amen

In Christ’s love and grace . . .
