Greetings
Several years ago, the marketers of Energizer batteries designed one of the best ads money could buy. The Energizer bunny became an icon in no time, and in a world where everything has limited shelf life, that was an excellent marketing strategy.
Here’s today’s nougat
For unto us a Child is born, until us a son is given. And the government shall be upon his shoulders, and his name shall be called, Wonderful Counsellor, the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father and the Price of Peace. Isaiah 9.6
One element of this potent name is hardly explored, that of Everlasting or Eternal Father. A parent who is always at the ready, never leaving, never forsaking. Or, ‘our dwelling place [where] underneath are the everlasting arms (Deuteronomy 33.27). Always around, ready to protect. Never failing to be present. Kinda like the Energizer bunny, but not. God isn’t a Christmas toy or absentee father, here today and gone tomorrow. God is here today, here to stay.
As Son, it may seem odd to connect Jesus with Father, but, he did declare himself one with God (I and my Father are one. John 10.30). And John prefaces his introduction of Jesus by placing him directly at the beginning of Creation. That’s fairly eternal.
I can’t recall whether the Energizer bunny made it into the 21st century, but I’m so glad that Jesus is all he is and more.
In Christ’s love and grace . . .
