“You love justice and hate evil. Therefore, O God, your God has anointed you, pouring out the oil of joy on you more than on anyone else.”” Hebrews 1:9 NLT

Love and hate can never be friends! So says the legendary Dennis Brown. It therefore behooves us to be intentional in what we choose to love and hate. For, though somewhat polar opposites, the emotions they stir can be equally strong and may even influence how we live.

Often times we may note that people make a vocation of opposing and nullifying that which they hate, at least according to the movies. We don’t always see as much energy directed to that which we love – unless it’s under threat or in need.

A call therefore to love justice and hate evil thus invites us asking ourselves where our priorities lie. For there are times that justice is not convenient. It may mean shifting our lifestyles , we might be placed in vulnerable situations, our lives and livelihoods might even be threatened. And in many instances, it is a thankless vocation.

So why should we love justice?

Because justice is dear to God’s heart. In God’s original blueprint we are created equal with oversight for the creation. In a convoluted moment of testing; humanity failed to recognize the injustice of becoming ‘like God’ outside outside of God’s will. In fact, since then it has become more and more evident that such a pursuit usually has extremely evil intentions.

We also note that in our desire to deepen our intimacy with our just God we ought also be just. Micah 6:8 affirms that this is one of God’s requirements for each of us. And, in response to the challenge being just implies; we will be boosting our Faith life. For truly the just MUST live by an abiding Faith (Habakkuk 2:4) that God’s justice will prevail over evil.

Additionally, from a practical standpoint, choosing justice over evil not only pleases God, but it also comes with a promise. Given that God has established a reputation of following through on promises made, we ought to be able to believe God. Thus as we seek God’s justice for ourselves and others, we ought to anticipate God’s anointing to strengthen us in our endeavors. And because we love it, we will also be filled with joy.

A recipe for success – seek Justice; hate evil and bask in God’s anointing for the journey. May God’s blessings continue to be ours.
