When plans go awry and life starts shifting in uncomfortable ways, some people place their trust in God. This in not unfounded, as Today’s Holy Nougat indicates. As we reflect, might we also consider whether we seek God when all is well.
Psalms 33:11 NIV
[11] But the plans of the Lord stand firm forever, the purposes of his heart through all generations.
A Trustworthy Source
Having previously spoken to the futility of planning outside of God’s will, the psalmist vouches for God’s plans. In contrast to other kings, emperors and other deities, YHWH’s plans carry an eternal guarantee. Implicit in that statement therefore, is the fact that YHWH is eternal, a trait that’s unique to YHWH, and intended to elicit trust from YHWH’s worshippers.
Self-Check
How does knowing God as El Olam (the Eternal God) affect our perception of God, and our inclination to seek God’s will in decision-making?
Deeper Dive
The plans referenced here and the previous verses can be interpreted as counsel; rendering God’s advice eternal. Read in light of YHWH, the self-Existent One, we find ourselves drawn to praise. Just imagine, a self-existing God, Who is beyond time offering us counsel from more than a bird’s eye view. As One Who transcends time, God’s got the picture beyond history (the past), current understanding (the present), and that which is yet to come (the future). Placed in that perspective, I’m sure we’re ready to praise God Who gives good counsel.
Furthermore, as the righteous who prioritise righteousness, we are assured of God’s favour beyond our generation. This is good news, for we have the assurance that God is with us and guiding whatever we place in God’s care. Since God honours God’s words, we also have the guarantee that God will do what God has promised. It is incumbent upon us to discern God’s promises and counsel for our lives as we align ourselves to God’s purpose. This is an opportunity to build generational wealth as we invest in lives beyond ourselves.
Point to Ponder
What counsel has God offered prior generations that blesses us and our family today? Isn’t it deserving of our praise to God?
