October 31

Greetings and salutations

It’s the last of October. Two months to a brand new year. Where will you be? We can plan, but God directs our steps.

Here’s today’s nougat

Come, everyone who thirsts,

come to the waters;

and he who has no money,

come buy and eat!

Come buy wine and milk

without money and without price. Isaiah 55.1

A favorite of mine. Yet not so easily understood on one level. In our capitalist materialistic world it is exceptionally hard to imagine bartering for even the essentials of life. And if out were an ordinary invitation, then we would be worrying about human trafficking and other horrors.

But God bids us come.

The same God who instructed Moses to speak water out of a rock.

The same God who fed Elijah via a raven and a poor widow

The same God who fed John the Baptist in the wilderness with locusts and honey

The same God who fed 5000 with 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish

The same God who sent Saul the persecutor to be nurtured by those he persecuted

The same God who provided manna and quail to the refugees of old

The same God who saw the Egyptian slave girl in the wilderness and called her by name

The same God invites us now, to come.

It’s scary, exhilarating, terrible amazing!

Come.

In Christ’s love and grace . . .
