Standing nearby were six stone water jars, used for Jewish ceremonial washing. Each could hold twenty to thirty gallons. John 2:6 NLT
The wedding was in full sway. Suddenly word reached Jesus’ mother, the wine was finished. She was confident that her son was The problem-solver. Even when he told her it wasn’t time as yet for him to intervene.
If this were a movie, I could easily “see” the cameras zooming on the empty spaces in the wine cellar with nothing from which to make juice, much more so, wine. Then they would switch in focus to the empty jars.
Those jars are nothing to sneeze at. A jar large enough to store 20-30 gallons of water is not lightweight! 6 of those jars could provide water for the mikvot, but wine?! Not likely.
But Jesus was there. With the benefit of hindsight, we can’t imagine those servants disobeying Jesus. Yet, most of us would be incredulous if Jesus were to give us even ONE empty jar to make wine (without us seeing any base own from which to even make juice).
The good news is, many of us are being invited to fill the nearby empty jar. We know who Jesus is. Do you know what time it is? Probably time to fill the jars around us.
