Nougat 8

So, in returning to the basics, we thought about the reality of God being (at) our beginning. Some may contest the Word, dismissing it as theory, but it is part of our foundational faith system. Today’s Holy Nougat offers a bit more.

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.” ‭‭Genesis‬ ‭1:1-2‬ ‭NLT‬‬

When something is formless, it doesn’t fully exist in a material sense; for it lacks (literal) substance and meaning. And that was the status of the earth at Creation. It was shapeless, and at that point, totally unfulfilled. It was all nothingness.

By listening to the pundits, one might see this as the baseline for various theories of human existence, whether Evolution or the Big Bang. And their premise may not be flawed – not in regard to the emptiness that existed. However, whatever route one takes after (and even before) the emptiness is what shapes the trajectory of our faith.

For to suppose chemicals by themselves, with no assistance, suddenly came together actually assumes that gases ie chemicals existed before the beginning. And my mind asks why did the gases come together before the beginning and which gases /chemicals then can be found in all matter. I have other questions there but I would argue that it boils down to God.

The same applies to the Evolutionary Theory. How did the first pre-evolutionary thing come into being? What was it? How did it reproduce itself, and at what rate, and why? Again, for me (and I confess to having a pre-established bias to an Omni-potent Creator), there still must have been an original moment when it all began. The same applies to the Clay, Ice, Lightening, Deep Sea and other theories

You see, faith – whether in God (YHWH) or other or nought – is a matter of choice. Each of us chooses what to keep or discard from the information we have at our disposal. Now don’t misunderstand me – not for one second am I denouncing God’s grace and impact on us – but I believe that a lot of our faith relies on the choices we make. For Evolution and Big Bang and Creation and the others require that we each choose to receive as Fact that which we cannot Prove … evidence of things not seen – Hebrews 11:1b.

So what does that have to do with our today? Well, it reminds us that the One Who added Form and Substance, and by virtue thereof, Purpose to the void called Earth is indeed One who offers Life and Hope to each of our formless and void situations. That God, Who having started the whole process, invites us to join the creative process. And that’s cause for celebration and worship.
