I can’t speak for others, but I sure wish I had CEO status in spiritual matters from time to time. In fact, I occasionally forget that I’m NOT the CEO, and have been caught telling Jesus how to rework life my way. My friend Nancy laughingly calls it the Jesus Complex.
That’s what Peter was doing. He didn’t want to hear of Jesus dying. In fact, he was confident that he was saving Jesus from negative talk. But if we read further in the passage, we realize that the Jesus Complex actually offends God.
So how else might we approach unwelcome issues such as bombings, death and disease? Could we spend a moment assessing our real gifts and skills, then offering them in practical ways? And what of prayer for direction and discernment? Or living what we believe in such a manner that change becomes feasible?
May our lives be a reflection of our true relationship with God.
