You know,
I have loads of White friends, in fact quite a few are part of this group. And I have Indian friends. And Hispanic friends. And I think I can safely say our friendships are solid.. But there are times like now when I wonder if folks understand what it means
. . To be constantly under scrutiny, pushing to prove I’m as good as, even if I’m better. To hear and rise above the temptation to react, lest. To be told keep your eyes downcast. To be relieved when a crime committed isn’t perpetrated by one of us. To be walking alone in a White neighbourhood and see a police cruiser and wonder seriously whether I’d be victimized since I was sporting a hoodie and locks. To wonder whether my uncles, brother, cousins, nephews, friends will be the next targets. In Europe, in the Caribbean, in the USA. For when it’s not White on Blacks, it’s Black on Black.
Sometimes I even rant about this to the Lord because it makes no sense. And please don’t insult my intelligence with the Curse of Ham argument. But, for all this raging, I’m tired. And while I know nothing is impossible under God, I’ve lost hope that us Black folks can overcome this systemic blot which even encourages us to despise ourselves and each other.
So what now, what next? Perhaps more of the same. Perhaps devolving into apartheid or de jure segregation once again. Yet we dare to judge other nations, based on what criteria?
Here’s today’s Holy Nougat™
Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter! Isaiah 5:20 ASV
Hmmn. Enough said
