Nougat 7

Familiar with the phrase, I have a writ against you? I remember when it would drive fear in the heart of many, because of the speaker. Perhaps today’s Holy Nougat will have that effect

“Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken the love you had at first.” ‭‭Revelation‬ ‭2:4‬ ‭NIV‬‬

​Although the first words that cross my mind whenever I read this nougat are ‘You’ve lost that loving feeling’, I hasten to say, that this isn’t ​a ​‘Righteous Brothers​ tune​, nor is it a​n invitation to indulge in ‘an open​’​ relationship. This is about our present and our eternal future. And the words of Jesus as recorded are damming!!’ For, as it relates to our spiritual lives, there’s only one first love : Jesus Christ.

To forsake our first love suggests that we actually began our journey with Jesus and managed to get beguiled along the way (Galatians 3). It’s a bit worse than losing the loving feeling. It’s perhaps closer to having the form of godliness but denying God’s power and authority (see 2 Timothy 3).

T​his calls for self examination –

Have there been moments in our recent (or distant) past that could be cause for concern in relation to our spiritual life/relationship with God?

When we pray ‘forgive us as we forgive’, do we have unconfessed sin to get rid of?

Have we been one of those who stands in judgement of another, or all of the rest?

Do we have secret sins that we need to confess to Christ?

How much of a priority has God been given in our lives?

If any of those resulted in a pause, perhaps it’s time to reevaluate the state of our union with Jesus.​ And if not, congrats. Keep up the good work!

So, having evaluated, and confessed and re/committed to our relationship with Christ, it is time to do just that. Live the life that pleases God.
