My Portion

A portion is a serving (allotment), or part of a whole. From this perspective, one could ask whether Jeremiah intended to offer us as God’s portion, as God is already a whole entity. But, if we relax the interpretation somewhat we recognize that an allotment refers to that which is our due, something that rightfully belongs to us. It’s like a living inheritance.

Mindful of that fact – that access to God is our right – how do we respond?

Do we attempt to ‘lord it over’ God, as if God were the created and we the Creator? Take my word for it, that won’t get us very far, for we truly don’t have the bigger picture.

Will we bury the knowledge, or save it for a rainy day? That works, but it’s certainly isn’t the best way to maximize our Treasure.

Or could we opt to learn more about God and God’s capabilities, thus ensuring that we engage God appropriately, working in tandem with God for our mutual benefit. It sounds like the best plan.

In older English, portion also included one’s lot in life, or one’s destiny. A living inheritance. If YHWH, Elohim, El Rohi, El Elyon, Adonai, YHWH Jireh, … God, is our destiny – siblings, our future is secure. If we can begin to grasp that we are God’s beloved and God is our destiny; WOW What a difference our walk would be! We would live with the pep that says we are in charge by God’s grace, not as ones under the yoke of submission. We might even opt to release others from the yoke of sin. Now, undergirded with the knowledge, it is possible for us to do just that!

A final, critical thought. An archaic translation suggests that the concept of portion was used in reference to the dowry of a bride. This may have been one of the interpretations used at the time when the Scriptures were translated to English, and if so, it perfectly captures the imagery of our being the Bride of Christ. I think it’s the absolute best meaning of all. Oh to be the Bride of Jesus!

As a single person, never been married, with a fully developed romantic streak, I am already in love with the idea of being in love. And Who better to be my Eternal Beau than Jesus Himself?! I think it’s time for me to get our romance in full swing. And, knowing how deeply I am loved by Jesus, I am willing to learn how to submit to Him.

I think to myself God is OUR Portion, Our Destiny, Our Inheritance, Our Allotment and Our Dowry. So much so that Jesus is already in Heaven preparing the Wedding Feast for eternity. Shall we wait for Him?
