“And it came to pass in these days, that he went out into the mountain to pray; and he continued all night in prayer to God.” Luke 6:12 ASV
So that’s where the all-night prayer meetings began! Out in the mountains. In Jamaica, there are prayer mountain experiences (especially with Ash Wednesday observances tomorrow); and some churches also engage in seasonal all-night prayer meetings.
Many persons might argue that they don’t have the stamina to do an all night prayer meeting – and it’s rough going; especially if it’s new (as it was for me) – but the truth is, we are called to pray without ceasing. For me, that translates to our awake time – although persons have fallen asleep praying and woke up praying.
I would that I prayed ceaselessly; for sin would have less scope on my mortal body, since I’d be preoccupied with God. However I’m working on keeping God in my presence always. Yes, you read it right – keeping God in my presence. In the sense that I’m always in God’s presence. As are you. But I know I sometimes forget. If however I have God in my presence – and I am aware of this – then I should have a different approach. Soon enough my brain and heart may remember that I’m always in God’s presence and my very breath must reflect such awareness.
What does that have to do with prayer you say.
Everything!
For if my actions reflect awareness of God with and within me, prayer becomes a continual aspect of my routine. I’d be speaking with God, Jesus and the Spirit of God as if we’re special intimate friends.
About everything. Since my heart would register and seek the presence of God. And God’s opinion. On the little things. And the worries. And the temper (which is managed mostly by God these days). And life in general. And family. And friends.
