Several years ago there was a radio programme called “You, Me and the Blessing Plan”. It wasn’t so much prosperity Gospel as it was a prayer line, long before those were in vogue. The blessing plan remains available, and as today’s Holy Nougat™ reveals, there are conditions.
Give it to the Levites, who will receive no allotment of land among you, as well as to the foreigners living among you, the orphans, and the widows in your towns, so they can eat and be satisfied. Then the Lord your God will bless you in all your work. Deuteronomy 14:29 NLT
Perhaps the conditions are best summarized as service to the less fortunate. But this wasn’t just random giving as it was one’s triennial tithe (given every three years).
What would it be like if us Christians were as intentional about providing for church workers, refugees, migrants, and the poor? That’s where the blessing seemed to lie. Is this one of the sundry biblical laws that gets ignored while we wonder why society has degenerated the way it has? (Perhaps that’s the consequence of ignoring God’s blessing plan.)
How do we respond to the poor, the desperate, the destitute and the migrant in our midst? Is it time for a spiritual check, especially in this season of ‘giving’?
