Have you ever read words in the Bible and then had them come alive for you later? I think I could safely say that describes me and Today’s Holy Nougat.
Psalms 34:20 CEB
[20] He protects all their bones; not even one will be broken.
Ancient Words
I thank God for the comfort this Nougat brings. The assurance that God’s word, even through God’s messenger, remains true for our lives. In his hymn, ‘Ancient Words’, Michael Smith reminds us of the effect that scripture can have on our lives. He states,
Holy words long preserved
for our walk in this world,
They resound with God’s own heart
Oh, let the Ancient words impart.
David was genealogically Y’shua’s great-grandfather by centuries. Yet, in his human frailty, he prophesied of a seemingly minute detail regarding Y’shua’s death with total accuracy. It is amazing! Indeed these are long preserved Holy words. Ironically, it is possible that David was unaware that he was prophesying about Y’shua’s death, as he was encouraging himself and his team while they fled Saul in Gath.
Yet, centuries later, we learn that indeed, owing to Y’shua dying before the Roman soldiers got to Him, they did not break any of His bones. We read in John 19:32-36, that the practice in those days was to break the legs of crucified felons so that death was hastened. But since He was already dead, they opted to simply pierce His side. Siblings, that was not a coincidence!
Self-Check
How often have we thought of something as coincidental, when it was actually God’s intervention?
Digging Deeper
Siblings, by choosing to die before they could pierce His body, Y’shua proved His power over the forces of evil and even death. Hence, Paul assures us, the sting of death is overpowered by our Saviour Y’shua. As simple as that detail might seem, the timing was impeccable. For, in that act, David’s prophetic word was fulfilled. This brings us hope that God will honour God’s promises to us. Not once, but always.
That’s the impact these ancient words can have on us. We read them time and time again, becoming profoundly transformed when they come to pass in our lives like a fresh prophetic word. So, let us hold to God’s promises, those true and comforting ancient words. They will keep us going no matter what we face.
Prayer Point
Might we join Michael Smith in celebrating these ancient words that assure us of God’s presence with us when we’re in the heart of the struggle?
