We often describe Christ’s agony in terms of the time on the cross. But, if we factor in the prayer – when his sweat became as blood – we might conclude that His suffering was more than time out upon the tree. It bears noting, for it is during the prayer that He yielded totally to God’s will, having contemplated alleviation of the pending suffering.
Sometimes we see our season of agony facing us. We try to bypass it to no avail. It is as though our very prayers are ignored and fall flat on the ground. And the world seems unaware of what we’re undergoing – ‘Let this cup pass Lord!’ ‘Are we done yet?’ ‘Was this truly critical for the road I’m on?’
Silence
But then, no matter the duration of the suffering – minutes, hours, weeks … 38 years – there comes a time when the suffering ends and gives way to a new normal. A new normal that combines death with life as we forfeit the struggle and yield our spirit to God’s. A new normal where death is not the final answer, rather it’s spiritual or transformational resurrection away from the agony we endured. A new normal where, contrary to what might seem obvious, we are not defeated, but are more than conquerors because Christ died and handed His own Spirit to Almighty God.
So chin up my dear, whatever suffering you face is not your final portion. For in Christ, there’s an end and afterwards, the reward.
