Having spent roughly 5 months with a mute Zacharias, Elizabeth is keenly aware of the implications of unbelief.
And, in light of her post-menopausal pregnancy, she also understands how hard it is to believe God for the impossible.
Zacharias was a priest; he should have had SOME understanding of how God works in our lives, but he did not ‘get’ God’s promise. Mary was just another girl, after her initial question; she could have counted the cost and determined that what God offered was but a pipe dream and the foundation for murder/suicide. Yet she dared to believe God.
Eventually Zacharias ‘got on board’ with God’s plan. (Elizabeth’s pregnancy was proof of that). Having compared both responses, Elizabeth was commending Mary for her ‘blind’ faith; her willingness to believe God simply because God sent a messenger with a promise and an invitation.
