I confess … there are times when I feel that all the signs are already manifested on Earth. But, as I type (actually, as I Swype), I am reminded of Braxton-Hicks contractions that begin as early as 6 weeks into pregnancy. Although more common in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters, these contractions feel very similar to labour and could be considered as test runs for delivery. I suspect that these ‘false contractions’ can be scary for the mother-to-be. However, at the onset of pregnancy, most mothers-to-be are advised to stay in touch with their medical care practitioner (midwife or doctor).

It is the same with the signs. When we recognise what’s happening around us to be a sign of Christ’s return, let’s opt for conversations with God and make time to read Scripture, rather than worrying. Consider Today’s Holy Nougat.

Luke 21:25 NIV

[25] “There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea.

Signs After Signs

We’ve already reflected on Matthew’s description of signs in the solar system. He outlined the phenomena in greater detail. I also know of persons studying the number of ‘Blood Moons’, solar eclipses, and other planetary action with the alertness of the Magi. When coupled with other signs mentioned, it is fair to say that the End is near. Moreover, when we see what’s happening with climate change or weather patterns, and what humanity seeks to achieve through science, some of us are convinced that the End isn’t long in coming.

Point to Ponder

What are our views on the scientific, political, social, and environmental shifts happening around us? Do they suggest that we are in the middle of birth pangs?

Application

From where I stand, things are changing rapidly. Sea levels are indeed rising. Tsunamis, volcanic action, earthquakes, and other geographic phenomena are on the increase. While climate ought to reflect weather patterns over 30-33 years, it feels as though everything is evolving at once. Some of this is due to our own human selfishness and greed – we abuse creation rather than steward it, we take more than we need with little concern for the other. Subsequently, what we experience now is the result of generations of disrespect for this planet.

However, it is worth noting that the prophets of old, as well as Y’shua, saw this coming. Just ask Daniel and John – they spoke about End Times long ago. Science has corroborated this with projections about tipping points, the greenhouse effect, carbon emissions and other such matters. I think we need to be paying attention.

Much of this falls within what is described as the Anthropocene. It is a scientific-sociological explanation for the era when humanity lives with the consequences of our greed. Although contested by some geologists, it is hard to say that our actions haven’t negatively impacted the planet. So much so, that the world’s wealthiest have invested in identifying potential for life outside of planet Earth. (Hmmn. Isn’t that what believers seek in our worst for eternal life? Imagine that!)

We note, therefore, increased space explorations, the discovery of water on other planets, and quests for solar systems similar enough to ours. Some of us suspect that even the enemy of our souls realises that that era of dominion is coming to an end. (Remember Prince’s 1999, and those who’ve predicted an end of the earth as we know it by 2030? Have you ever wondered what’s behind such talk?) All this says to us, Look up to Heaven, for our redemption draws nigh!

Many are worried. We could easily get caught up in the worry also. What happens in our world, and what’s yet to come provides fodder for horror films.

But, we know the Prince of Peace; and in Him is our rest. So, let’s hold firmly to Him, knowing that He truly is able to keep us, and prevent us from falling …

Self-Check

In times like these, when we live in the Anthropocene, with the signs following signs, where do we put our trust? What gives us hope?

May all we seek be found in Christ
