Hi
Have you ever watched the movie Bruce Almighty? It’s an interesting perspective on god-ness and appreciating that God’s ways are most definitely NOT our ways. Speaking of which, here’s today’s Holy Nougat™
Give us today the food we need, Matthew 6:11 NLT
Many times, our petitions to God though perceived as needs actually qualify as wants. Partly because we’ve long bought into the systems of the culture around us and the lens we use to ascribe value have become slightly distorted.
But what if we are not being materialistic and God still does not give us what we need – the job … the spouse … the house … the child – is God still good; is God still God? What about when we seem to have the spiritual Midas touch, when whatever we ask in Jesus’s name seems to be answered in the affirmative at the get go? Does that make us more special or more anointed than other Christians?
What happens when my desire/need is totally opposite another believer’s? Bruce the Almighty (the movie) helps put some of this in perspective; although God doesn’t quite operate as randomly as Bruce did (pull the moon closer for a date, “Yes” to all requests, etc).
Perhaps the best way forward is to say thanks, acknowledging that today’s gifts are the manna – the bread – we need for today, with perhaps a bit of surplus for tomorrow’s sabbath. And, rather than hoarding, remind ourselves that if God provided manna today, our good God SHALL and WILL provide for us manna (AND quail) tomorrow.
So Lord we thank You for supplying our needs today. We bless You for the brawta (that little bit of extras) which is exactly what we need to tide us over till tomorrow. May we take/ask of You that which we need and not take so much that it goes sour. Most of all, help us to ensure that those who can’t express their needs are also able to eat at Your table, especially when it’s the Bread of Justice or Dignity please Lord. Teach us once again how to share, and remind us Lord how to care we pray in Jesus’s Holy name Amen
In Christ’s love and grace . . .
