Hello dear
We’re using a slightly different approach today. Blessings
“Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.”
Philippians 4:8 NRSV
Salvation is a free gift from God to us. Few realize however, that accepting the gift comes with somewhat costly implications and expectations. Consider today’s Holy Nougat for example; ‘whatsoever is honorable’ – really!?
Honor often travels with integrity and integrity is often hard to find. Among community and political leaders, one could say it is a rarity – and a no-longer-expected character trait. So much so that someone in leadership who displays such is usually scrutinized for proof that they are unscrupulous.
Unfortunately, this skepticism has spilled over towards faith leaders, as some have abused the trust invested in us. And when it’s a matter of negative traits; most humans have long memories and short levels of tolerance.
What if today’s Holy Nougat was inviting us to reflect on the honorable traits in those who are acting dishonorably? To focus on the POSITIVE aspects of the horrible experience? Remember; this letter was penned to people who were experiencing persecution and abuse. If they were like some of us; they were already nervously anticipating their own demise. And they might have begun to label the persecutors. Yet, that’s not what Stephen did. To his dying moment; he followed Christ’s Standard by blessing his attackers with forgiveness. And before you tell me fat lot of good that did him – Saul of Tarsus was among them. The same Saul who was transformed and to whom this letter is credited.
Yup, we might not be able to see the honorable in the lives of our attackers. But choosing to focus on that Christ-trait buried deep may trigger a shift even beyond our time together.
And of course; if we are choosing to focus on the honorable in others; it may be helpful if we are not only thinking, but also living an honorable life in Christ.
It’s a priceless gift, that salvation. Let’s live it with prayer
In Christ’s love and grace . . .
