Nougat 4

Greetings

My friend Nancy speaks about the ‘Jesus complex’ ever so often when we are together. It’s the tendency to think that we can solve the world‘a problems all by ourselves. Sometimes we also feel that we’re the only one others should approach with their concerns.

John the Baptist would have had every reason to feel that way. Prior to the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry, he was The Voice for God in a world that had lost its ability to speak with or for God. And with his unique call, he could easily have gotten ahead of himself.

But he didn’t.

When his disciples began to be troubled by Jesus’ meteoric rise in ministry; John had one response for them. It was the same message he preached from the onset … ‘I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness; preparing the WAY for the Lord.’ John had zero delusions about his role. He recognized that Jesus is the Messiah, and was content with being the forerunner.

Our context today is somewhat different. We are not the forerunners of Jesus’ public ministry. But we are forerunners of Christ‘a return. We are simply messengers. Anointed by God as messengers about Christ‘s love, forgiveness and imminent return. So when others mistake our actions for that of the Messiah, may our response be as clear and consistent as John‘s in today’s Holy Nougat

May God grant us strength to be clear about our role.
