Ready for some soul searching? Here’s today’s Holy Nougat
“No, O people, the Lord has told you what is good, and this is what he requires of you: to do what is right, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.” Micah 6:8 NLT
Is it that there’s a ‘disobedience’ trigger, within us, or are we challenged to figure out justice, mercy and humility? For we often give the impression that we only care about our own interests.
Some of us are very serious, make that passionate, about justice and we are good at it; but we are not always very easy to live with.
Then, there are those who seem to overflow with mercy, but we’re either false (offering mercy/compassion to folks with ulterior motives) or we are very selective about who we extend mercy to. Many of us anyways.
Humility is interesting, for I once heard that if I have to describe myself as humble, I most likely am not. Just think, pride so often overwhelms us; especially in a culture which insists that to ‘get ahead’ we must be the best – even to the detriment of another. Then, in our selfie-inflicted world, we are encouraged to brag, post or proudly celebrate in such a manner that others might be jealous enough to mimic us. Yet despite our best efforts, we often get dragged in. (I’ve heard televangelists and charismatic pastors introduced as humble; and marveled at their comfort with the adulation they receive willingly (and expectantly) from the worshippers; and am left stumped at the humility they don’t seem to display).
So, if justice, humility and mercy are nigh on impossible; what is the point of the invitation? To highlight humanity’s baser instincts? Unlikely. For the invite speaks to a divine requirement. Rather, it is an invitation to walk with God, so that God outworks in us the real deal – to be genuinely merciful; to pursue justice passionately (from God’s perspective), and to recognize that ultimately all the good that we are derives from God; hence the glory is God’s, not ours. And for that we need a daily dose of Jesus. In our hearts, thoughts and permeating our actions.
Lord, take total control today we pray. In Christ’s love and grace . . .
