Nougat 31

Our promise, found in today’s Holy Nougat, is one worth learning.

“You are my hiding place— You will protect me from distress. You surround me with songs of deliverance. Selah” ‭‭Psalms‬ ‭32:7‬ ‭TLV‬‬

I remember many a Hiding Place I had as a child. The best one was the linen closet atop the clothes closet. Sometimes we actually kept linens there; but it was initially a storage space for books (my family loves to read!). To get up there I had to use the slats in the closet door as my ladder rungs. I was the only one who was keen on climbing up there.

One day, while playing Hide and Seek, I realized that if I closed the regular latch first, then used a flat tool to secure the door with the broken latch, no one could find me. How I loved my hiding place! It felt like no one could find me! And in the moments where I was avoiding licks or housework or people – it was perfect. Of course, it was somewhat of a challenge to get out, so I occasionally missed out on fun stuff. Then one day I was too big to fit and be safe, I was obliged to abandon my hiding place.

When God is our Hiding Place, we get all that and more. For, God’s door isn’t broken in any place, since Jesus Christ is our door! We find rest, release, solace, shelter in Him. Danger can and will come; but God’s Spirit dwells with and within us, giving us the grace to ride out our storms and whatever other situations we face. In God’s Hiding Place, we have God’s Peace – the kind we ourselves can’t even begin to understand.

The kind that said, ‘if we perish – so be it’. The kind that is tested by the flames of adversity and, barring the smell of smoke, remains undisturbed by it. (Yes, smoke, for I was referencing the flames the three Hebrews passed through and survived. My theory is, the smell of smoke remained on their clothes as a reminder of Who they served.) The kind that finds God in all circumstances and is able give thanks. The kind we all need in these times.

That’s where we find the songs of deliverance being belted out from our spirits.

Do we trust God enough to allow Jesus to be our Hiding Place?
